The Origins of Illumarine

Hello, my name is Samantha (also known as Barry B. Benson dev), and I am the creator of Illumarine. An Illumos-based operating system inspired by (but not affiliated with) the Ultramarine Linux distribution. I have never built an operating system before, but my ex created some popular Linux and FreeBSD distributions that I helped lightly with. My minimal experience makes this project difficult.

I usually try to keep anonymous online, but I felt comfortable enough to write this blog post with my real name in it. 

My initial goal with Illumarine was to make a Linux-esque Illumos distribution. I'll admit, while I still want to work on Illumarine, that initial goal was created while high. I ultimately decided to build an operating system that makes me happy, and hopefully get some people into the Illumos community.

I might know hyper-paranoia, C/C++, shell scripting, and Python, I have never built an OS before by myself. Give it time, and be patient with me.

Why Illumarine?

Illumarine was named after Ultramarine Linux and Illumos. I must state again, I am not officially affiliated with Ultramarine Linux (Jade (Fyra Labs COO) tells me to ensure this is made clear). I am not a fan of Systemd, or modifying the Linux kernel. I have used OpenIndiana for much of the last decade, but ultimately I started on Linux, and I keep going back to Linux because some things I need are not available in OpenIndiana, and I wanted to change that in a way that made the most sense.

Ultimately my goal with this OS is to build something interesting, and to test my limits. I will not work on this publicly forever, as I don't want to monetize it in any way, and ultimately this is 95% a learning experience and to do something with my life that isn't drug related.

I don't aim to please everyone with this OS, and I know many people will be upset with my choices of tech, but ultimately I want something that works, that is something I can show off, and hopefully move on with my life.
