XLibre and the future of Illumarine/illumos
I believe XLibre, not Wayland, is the future of illumos desktops. While there may be some political issues some projects have with XLibre, I ultimately am choosing the best technology for the Illumarine project.
What is XLibre?
XLibre is an alternative X server. With X11 slowly dying, and Wayland proving itself to be a Linux-first technology, I felt as if there was little to no choice but to use XLibre. XLibre has been called "neo-Nazi trash" by some in the open-source space, but in truth I have seen absolutely zero evidence of this claim. Ultimately, while I would love to stick with X11, it is slowly being replaced on Linux, and even some *BSD systems.
I have seen the community be nothing but inclusive, but dismissive of DEI. In truth, I don't understand DEI enough to care whether or not it should be a thing.
Why XLibre?
I have chosen XLibre ultimately because it is the best long-term solution for desktop illumos, in my mind. No one is going to support Wayland on illumos - as far as I can tell - and with X11 receiving minimal updates, XLibre just seems like the best long-term solution.
I ultimately hope the illumos community understands my decision in pushing forth XLibre, because it is being maintained, it has a community behind it, and it has dedicated developers behind it. It being independent of FreeDesktop.org is also a major plus side, as many of the hyper-bureaucratic issues plaguing X11 currently will not be as much of an issue. XLibre has the best chance for survival and supporting illumos, and with Illumarine focusing on being the first illumos distro to support it, hopefully some progress can be made.
